Signal Generators for the iPhone

Posted In: Live Sound, Recording

iPhonePart 2 of iPhone, an Audio Engineer’s BFF.

A Signal Generator always comes in handy.  Wether it’s to test components, having test tones, or testing frequency response…

Having a signal generator in your pocket that not only plays through the iPhone’s speakers, but also through the headphone port to any setup with just an 1/8th inch cable is far more handy than you can imagine.

Here’s a few Signal Generators available on the iTunes store for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Signal SuiteSignal Suite – by Faber Acoustical

In my opinion, the best Signal/Noise Generator out there for the iPhone… The interface is quite intuitive (given you know what all the labels mean).

Here’s a run down of some of Signal Suite’s features.

  • Generate tones (Periodic Signals) of any frequency 20 Hz – 20 kHz
    • Sine Waves
    • Rectangular Waves
    • Triangular Waves
    • Sawtooth Waves
    • Generate Two Tones Simultaniously
  • Generate Pink or White Noise
    • Both Pink or White Noise can be generated in Random, LS, or Pseudo Round
  • Generate Frequency Sweeps
    • Variable Start/End Points
    • Linear or Logarithmic Sweeps
    • Variable Duration
    • Repeat Function
    • Variable Direction of Sweep as well as Up Down/Down Up Functions
  • All can be used simultaneously or one at a time
  • All have individual Amplitude and Pan Controls
  • Can reverse polarity of L and or R
  • State saved at each exit

If i’ve learned one lesson with this app, it is that it continues to put out noise until you close the application… Even if you put the phone to sleep.  That is why an annoying 8k tone was following me around one evening.

Signal Suite – $9.99 SignalSuite

With a very simple User Interface, Generator makes generating tones easy.  One Screen, and a scrolling wheel to choose tones/bands…

On to the Features

  • Generate Tones from 20 Hz to 20 kHz
    • Sine Waves
    • Square Waves
    • Can be selected by Octave, 1/3 Octaves, or by exact Freq
    • Can “Wobble” a frequency to fluxuate the frequency slightly
    • Shortcut Buttons to 1 kHz and 10 kHz
  • Generate Pink or White Noise
    • Full Frequency Spectrum or by Octave (400 – 800 Hz, 800 – 1600 Hz, ect)
  • Overall Attenuator w/ Mute button

Overall this application is great.  White not as feature rich as Signal Suite, it is far simpler.
