BSS DPR-901II A Dynamic Equalizer?

Posted In: Live Sound, Recording

BSS AudioBSS has been a leader in Dynamics and Equalizers for quite some time, but what happens when you combine the two?  You wind up with the BSS DPR-901II Dynamic Equalizer.

A Dynamic Equalizer?  Yup.  Also known as a multi-band compressor…

I’ve had a few chances to get my hands on this unit, and I’ve always been happy with it.  On Vocals, on Guitars… It’s a winner.

Here’s the broad look.

  • 1 Rack Space
  • In/Out Switch
  • Master Metering
  • 4 Bands
  • The Ability to Split the unit into 2 x 2 channels

And Each Band has…

  • In/Out Switch
  • Center Frequency Rotary
  • Freq Q Rotary
  • Ch 1 and Ch 4 Have Switchable Shelfing
  • Comp or Expander Rotary
  • “Below” Activation (to Activate Expander)
  • Threshold Rotary
  • Fast Release Activation
  • Metering for Main, Compression, and Expansion
  • When in Split Mode CH 2/3’s Filters are canceled for wide band operation

All Inputs and Outputs on this unit are balanced XLR, with 1 in 1 out for the mains, or 2 in 2 out when in split mode.

When used live, I would suggest using this before a straight compressor, using the 901II for it’s true purpose, a dynamic equalizer, and the straight compressor for over-all dynamic control.

Also, this unit has proven fantastic at excentuating an airy or whispery quality in one’s voice.
